Movies I Saw
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011, dir. Tomas Alfredson)
First off, I have not read the book. This movie was probably meant for people who read the book, who actually understood what was going on. ForĀ almost the whole movie, I was thinking “Wtf is going on??” I figured it out eventually. The plot is very simple, but the way it is presented is extremely choppy and disjointed. I understand from an artistic point that that type of presentation represents what I was like to be in the intelligence community during the Cold War (missing info, confusion, etc), but from an entertainment standpoint it stunk. Audiences need to be presented information that helps them understand the film, at the very least in the end, but this film left me wanting for more information about who the characters were and what was going on. After researching this movie on the internet, I found that people are praising the actors’ performances. But seriously, Gary Oldman has better performances in many other movies (Harry Potter, Fifth Element), and Colin Firth has as well (King’s Speech, A Single Man). Rating: Thumbs down.
